Mehr und mehr Software sind im Netz als Dienste verfügbar. Der Umfang solcher Dienste reicht von einfachen Mailing-Programmen, wie beispielsweise Hotmail, über umfangreicher Kollaborationstools, wie Sharepoint Online. Microsoft hat bereits Web Apps (Applikationen, die über das Internet genutzt werden können) in sein Portfolio aufgenommen. Mit Office 365 kommt nichts brandneues, es handelt sich hierbei viel mehr um ein Update der BPOS (Business Productivity Online Suite). Gegenwärtig befindet sich Office 365 mit Office Professional Plus, Lync Online, Sharepoint Online und Exchange Online im Beta-Stadium. Die voraussichtliche finale Version wird im Frühjahr 2011 auf den Markt kommen. Bis dahin gibt es ein Video, das erste Eindrücke vermittelen soll.
