Microsoft 365 Copilot for Microsoft Teams telephony

At this year’s Microsoft partner conference Inspire in July 2023, Microsoft announced many innovations. There was a lot going on, especially around artificial intelligence (AI). In the context of Microsoft 365 and productivity, the focus was on Copilot and its integration into the various services, including Microsoft Teams and telephony with Teams.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to test anything on this yet, because Microsoft 365 Copilot is not yet available in a public preview for everyone. Currently, Microsoft 365 Copilot is in a closed or private preview (Early Access Program), where very few Microsoft 365 customers (about 600) can and are allowed to test.

Microsoft 365 Copilot features for Teams telephony

Artificial intelligence (AI), Microsoft 365 Copilot, is basically intended to make our work easier and, in particular, to reduce the effort required for tasks that tend to be annoying. This should enable us to use our time meaningfully for other tasks. The following features and innovations by Microsoft 365 Copilot for Teams Telephony were announced on Inspire 2023, without ETAs so far.

  • Unschedule calls in Teams
  • Generate call summaries
  • Capture action items
  • Ask questions to Copilot to get an answer

Although I mentioned it is for telephony, it is said that the features are designated for common “internal” calls, meaning Team-User-2-Team-User, as well as PSTN calls (i.e. calling plans, direct routing, operator connect, teams phone mobile).

Conclusion, opinion and summary

In general, I’m looking forward to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Although it is not a low priced user add-on license the benefits for daily tasks for certain groups of users could be worth it, e.g. create call summaries, create meeting summaries, create tasks and assign them, ask questions to some topic some time ago. I could imagine that these things could be quick wins at the start of a Microsoft 365 Copilot introduction. To start with a more in-depth Copilot usage beyond Team calling and meetings there are some preparations and prerequisites required. Basically, before implementing Microsoft 365 Copilot, certain organizational, legal, and technical aspects must be examined, clarified, and prepared. So, in case you want to start early, you have to start early (with the preliminary tasks).
