End of support for Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019 client connections to Microsoft 365

In this post I like to remind you that connections to Microsoft 365 from Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019 clients are retired and no longer supported. On October 10, 2023 the support ended. Microsoft informed people about this previously and broadly on their common communication channels. Office for Mac 2019 is also no longer supported.

What are the consequences?

In case you still operate and use Microsoft Office 2016 or 2019 to connect to Microsoft 365 any further changes and improvements may not work with it. Microsoft is not going to test anything regarding Microsoft 365 based on Microsoft Office 2016 or 2019. So, if you are on Office 2016 or 2019 it is not (yet) actively blocked by Microsoft as long as the version is up-to-date but as mentioned certain changes might cause feature or connectivity impacts which will not be fixed in the future.

What could you you?

To satisfied the Microsoft 365 connect requirements you could use to Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2021 (October 13, 2026).
