SMS for Microsoft Teams calling plans in U.S. and Canada

Microsoft announced to bring SMS chat to Microsoft Teams for calling plans. It is planned to start its rollout in mid or end of February 2025. Currently it is just for U.S. and Canada.

This new feature will allow users to send and receive SMS messages directly within Teams on Windows, Mac, and iOS/Android.

Admins need to enable SMS functionality for users with calling plans. The change will be available by default, but administrative action is needed for enabling 10-digit long code (10DLC) numbers.

Users will see PSTN contacts in search areas for starting SMS chats within Teams.

Conclusion, opinion and summary

Integrating SMS in Teams for users in the U.S. and Canada makes a lot of sense because SMS is still widely used there. People rely heavily on SMS for both personal and business communication, making this feature a valuable addition.

While it’s possible that this feature could eventually be introduced in Germany, it seems less likely given the declining use of SMS here. In Germany and other parts of Europe, messaging apps like WhatsApp and so on are far more popular, reducing the demand for SMS integration.
