In this post I like to point out a recent message center notification tell us that the AMR-WB codec will be supported in Microsoft Teams Direct Routing deployments. It will be introduced and working in non-media-bypass VoIP calls (to/from public telephony network, PTN). Microsoft aims to start the rollout in March 2026 as mentioned in message center notification MC1234572.

What is the AMR‑WB codec in Microsoft Teams Direct Routing?
The AMR‑WB (Adaptive Multi‑Rate Wideband) codec is a modern wideband audio codec originally designed for mobile networks. In Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, AMR‑WB is being introduced to improve voice clarity, especially on non–media‑bypass calls, by offering richer, more natural‑sounding audio compared to narrowband codecs like G.711.
Unlike existing codecs used in Teams such as SILK and G.711 (commonly used for PSTN ) the AMR‑WB aims to provide better compression efficiency while maintaining high audio quality. With the new enhancement, Teams will offer and prefer AMR‑WB when the connected Session Border Controller (SBC) supports it, without requiring additional configuration. You can added it to the SBC SIP trunk, on Audiocodes it’s the Codec Group and Allowed Audio Coders Group, which is used for Microsoft Teams.
But please note that using AMR-WB which might also require transcoding on the SBC towards other SIP trunks might require additional licenses if not yet included and available on your SBC.
