In this post I like to highlight an upcoming change of the Microsoft Teams preview client app. Today’s preview app is planned to be transitioned into generally available starting from October 2023 as mentioned in a recent Microsoft 365 roadmap update 122540.

As of now (July 2023) there is no feature-parity between the production and preview client. However, there is work in progress. On the support page you can read what further features are going to be added in the Teams preview app. E.g third-party apps, LOB apps, advanced calling features like voice-enabled channels, reverse number lookup (RNL), contacts, speed dial, boss delegation, shared line appearance, advanced meeting capabilities.
Are you already using the new Microsoft Teams client app? I’m using it but, to be honest, not all the time because I’m missing some features. What do you think, will there be feature-parity?

There are Teams update policies but will the be applied, still? The Microsoft learn page regarding the new desktop client was updated on July 1, 2023, based on this there are two aspects which influence the client update you should be aware of:
- Microsoft 365/Teams license is assigned to the user and
- Microsoft 365 app update channel
Anyway, I would suggest that you start to prepare users for this upcoming change in fall 2023 and keep an eye on the Microsoft 365 roadmap and message center notifications.
