In this post I like to point out an upcoming change which will impact SharePoint Server (on-premises!) access with the SharePoint Mobile App. In case you are SharePoint (Server) Admin this might be important for you if you operate a local SharePoint Server infrastructure and allow users to access it by using the SharePoint Mobile App. This is getting retired soon. To be a bit more precise Microsoft has announced that support for accessing SharePoint Server through the standalone SharePoint mobile app for iOS and Android will be retired starting November 27, 2026.
After this date, the SharePoint mobile app will support SharePoint Online only. Organizations still relying on SharePoint Server environments for mobile access should review their current usage and prepare users accordingly.
Users accessing on-premises SharePoint Server environments via the SharePoint mobile apps will no longer be able to do so after the retirement date. Microsoft is aligning the mobile app experience exclusively with SharePoint Online and Microsoft 365 services.
Conclusion, opinion and summary
If your organization still operates SharePoint Server environments, consider taking the following steps:
- Identify users currently accessing SharePoint Server from mobile devices.
- Communicate the upcoming change to affected users.
- Update internal documentation and support materials.
- Evaluate migration options to SharePoint Online where appropriate.
While this change will not impact SharePoint Online customers, organizations maintaining on-premises SharePoint Server deployments should use the remaining time to assess dependencies and plan alternative access methods for mobile users.
