Microsoft 365 apps will prompt users to back up files in OneDrive

Microsoft announced a major update regarding Microsoft 365 apps prompting users to back up their files in Microsoft OneDrive. It is associated with the Microsoft message center ID MC1053121. Eligible users will be prompted in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to enroll in OneDrive Known Folder Move (KFM).

Public Preview rollout will begin mid-April 2025 and complete by late April 2025. General Availability rollout will begin early May 2025 and complete by mid-June 2025.

  • Users enrolled in KFM will benefit from increased security, Copilot support, easy collaboration, access from anywhere, and backup protection.
  • No action is required as the feature will be enabled automatically for eligible users.
  • Organizations that have blocked KFM will not see the message.
  • A new policy called Restrict KFM from Office is available to prevent the message from displaying in Office apps.

As next you might want to review your current configuration if your organization has neither restricted nor rolled out OneDrive KFM.
